The Bloody Chamber
A Gothic aesthetic exploration based on Angela Carter’s dark tales, reimagining themes of forbidden desire, bodily confinement, and female awakening through costume.
Inspiration
This project explores the haunting parallels between Angela Carter’s The Bloody Chamber and Su Tong’s Raise the Red Lantern. Both narratives dissect the plight of a young woman married into wealth, only to be entombed within a magnificent, suffocating estate. By integrating the visual language of William McGregor Paxton—specifically his portraits of Western women in Chinese silk—I aim to infuse the Gothic 'Bloody Chamber' with Chinoiserie elements, creating an aesthetic of exquisite, silent claustrophobia."
