Visual Research & Costume Direction

Atmosphere

Although both stories share the same setting, they exist in two contrasting visual worlds: one in colour, the other in black and white.

‍ ‍The Medium focuses on the lives of the lower class, where performance becomes a means of survival, and identity is constructed through the act of playing roles.

Design Development

Costume Language

Process

Cancel the wig and change the wide-leg trousers to a skirt. Add black fabric for a more mysterious look.

Use tea dyeing to make the skirt look more worn and impoverished.

Final Performance

The costume design exaggerates the visual contrast between social classes, emphasising inequality.

Lower-class characters are defined through worn, disordered garments, reflecting a life sustained by alcohol and instability.

Add a distressed finish to the garment as the final touch.

Add shoulder pads and shorten the trouser legs.
